NUME - FUTURE OF PERSONALISED NUTRITION
Umeå Insitute of Design in collaboration with Microsoft | 5 weeks group project | 2016
In cooperation with Andre Kennedy, Yuanrui Li and Lene Rydningen.
MY CONTRIBUTION ethnographic research, workshops, wireframing, graphic design, project management
Ecosystem designed to enable you to provide the nutrients that your body needs by eating food you like.

Background

Scale of the problem
50% of Americans think it is easier to do their taxes than to figure out how to eat healthfully
[The IFIC Foundation’s 2012 Food & Health Survey]

Consequences
Medical costs linked to obesity were estimated to be $147 billion in 2008.
[Annual Medical Spending Attributable To Obesity by Eric A. Finkelstein & others]
Process
Ethnographic research
Observations and interviews
Importance of food and its source, as well as emotional and cultural value of preparing home-cooked meals.

Probing
Discovering that people are disconnected from the knowledge about food, farming and needs of their own body.
Further interviews

Nutritionist
Influence of taste, habits, family or group, culture.
Cost and availability of fresh ingredients and cooking skills.
Pregnant woman
Overwhelming amount of information.
Told what not to eat instead of what to eat.
Problem definition

Education
The packaging of food is often confusing and incomprehensible for the general population keeping consumers out of the loop about what the food actually contains.
Delayed feedback
Our bodies give us instant feedback about a lot of things like temperature. But with food it is sometimes hard to link our habits with long-term consequences.
Goals
Translating nutrition into actions
Knowing that a banana contains 422 mg of potassium is not very helpful for the user. But the information that your low potassium might be the cause of the lack of energy and it can be fixed by adding some bananas to your diet sounds much better.

Providing feedback
With our concept we were aiming to present how user's daily decisions influence his or her future health and well-being.
Validation workshop

Understanding context
During the workshop each participant was assigned a persona and had a chance to explore daily life of this person and empathize with her or his needs, concerns and expectations.

Exploring ecosystem
As a persona participants were exploring flexible lo-fi system designed for this workshop. We tried to capture future pain points, gather feedback and understand how we can cater for different needs.

Non-intrusive
Many of today’s systems revolve around users actively providing info into the system. Nume works in the background of our everyday lives.

Learning from the user
Most systems are limited to showing statistics. Nume presents actions instead and provides user with tools that make transition into healthy diet as easy as possible.
